RESOURCES | 10 THINGS WE'VE SEEN REALLY SUCCESSFUL ARTISTS DO
As creators ourselves we have experienced and understand firsthand the challenges artists face when pursuing a creative career. Over the last 3 years we have met a huge number of artists, each trying to develop their style and maintain a full time career in the art world. We've carefully distilled what we have learned into 10 things our most successful Artists have done to create their exhibitions at Sixteen Gallery, which we hope you can use in your own artistic journey.
NUMBER 3: KNOW THEIR AUDIENCE
If your work is liked by everyone it will often be loved by no one
We have never vetted the work that gets seen at the gallery. We have always been on hand to provide advice on what we think looks good and how we ourselves might curate a show but Art is a subjective field and we've always believed "Who are we to say what's good art and bad art".
The last three years has shown us that the serious artists, create work solely for themselves and then look to find its audience. You need to have confidence in the work you create and put it out into the world without restraint.
If you do, like-minded people who also love what you have made will find you. As humans, we're not as unique as we think we are. There will be people out there who will love the work you make if you are as passionate about it as possible and simply share it with as wide an audience as you can. Sure, you might have to go through a lot of people who don't like your work, but when you find those who do, it's always worth the wait.
Don't make work you think will sell because it's popular, you will never have the passion for it and fall into the trap of making work you don't enjoy just to keep it selling. We've noticed the thing about selling artwork is that if your work is liked by everyone it will often be loved by no one. And it's the people who love your artwork that will ultimately end up buying it and keep coming back to support you.
