This month, we're looking to the Capital as it brings us out of the summer with an excellent selection of historic exhibitions across 4 of the heavy weights of London's Art institutions.

VAN GOGH: POETS AND LOVERS - NATIONAL GALLERY, LONDON
A much anticipated show arrives at the National Gallery this month. Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers promises to be stunning in all senses, offering a once-in-a-century look at some of Van Gogh's most humbling paintings to celebrate his 200th birthday. Brought together from around the world, the exhibition aims to reveal works rarely seen outside private collections and display them with the big hitters and a collection of his drawings.
All the way from Philadelphia, one of the seven Sunflowers Van Gogh painted in Arles will be reunited with the National Galleries own, making this a really special chance to see a little living art history. Van Gogh fans, be prepared to be moved.

FRAGILE BEAUTY: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE SIR ELTON JOHN AND DAVID FURNISH COLLECTION - V&A, LONDON
Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish have long been known as great collectors of art, specifically championing photography; and have grown a collection of both inspiring and historically important prints, just some of which are on show at the V&A. This collection is a bastion of contemporary photography including everything from fashion to reportage, from Nan Goldin to Ai Weiwei; the list of photographers names alone will all but make you weep with anticipation.
Rare are the photography exhibitions outside of the dedicated photography spaces, so the opportunity to see over 300 rare prints in such a beautiful exhibition space gives the shows name an extra meaning, and begs for this exhibition not to be missed. Get a taster below:

IN THE EYE OF THE STORM - MODERNISM IN UKRAINE, 1900-1930s - RA, LONDON
Google reviews of this show and you will get adjective upon adjective in the vein of startling, revelatory, dynamic, shattering. Need I share more?
This exhibition has been touring Europe since 2022 when the paintings became political refugees from Kyiv and have been entangling viewers in their freedom ever since. I can wax lyrical about the great names and historical importance of the works on show, or I can just say go for yourself; stand, experience, learn no doubt you will be enchanted and inspired along the way.

NOW YOU SEE US - WOMEN ARTISTS IN BRITAIN 1520 - 1920 - TATE BRITAIN, LONDON
Be a radical feminist or don't this show is not about preaching and excluding but dismantling the stereotypes around women artists and including them in the art historical canon. It includes over 150 works highlighting boundary breaking women as they put their work and their names into history, creating an informative and unpretentious revelatory show.
There's some big hitter names here, Artemisia Gentileschi who is (quite rightfully) having a revivalist moment right now, included. But there are a trove of excavated pieces and "new" artists to discover, it's almost definitive that you will find a new female artist to love.
Check out the guide for some great information on some of the history and highlights.
That's all for the September round up - but that's a lot to get your teeth into. While trying not to focus solely London, these four shows are ones I am so excited to get to that they just had to be mentioned. We'll leave the summer behind and head out of the Capital next month!
