NOVEMBER'S NEW ARTISTS

NEW | ARTISTS

NICHOLAS HOLMES AND ROY SHAPIRO

This month we are introducing two of the new artists who have joined Sixteen Online in the last month. With wildly different styles and themes bringing even more diversity of creativity to the collective, these two painters are brought together by their intriguing and curious takes classical styles.

NICHOLAS HOLMES

Nick makes dynamic colourful paintings that respond to the cultural landscape of our present time. Often starting from small collages made of collected imagery from catalogues and magazines, he creates acrylic paintings which comment on society and take a wry look at social themes with a questioning and playful approach. The resulting images are bright and energetic, almost mischievous evoking intrigue and often humour in the viewer. Alongside his amalgamated style works, he also paints figures and portraits, bringing his striking use of colour and social commentary into the pieces. Playing with narratives and historical references his portraits are lively, whimsical works which are permeated with his sense of humour creating his signature style.

ROY SHAPIRO

Roy paints expressive still lifes in oils, using his studio setting to create curious tableaus of eclectic objects, foods and flowers. His realistic style and beautifully observed natural and manmade forms paired with witty considered titles create energetic yet thoughtful pieces which speak to the vitality and abundance of nature and our interaction with it. Strongly influenced by 17th century Dutch, Flemish and Spanish painters, Roy's style is classical but with a modern twist as he plays around with the objects and the way they interact in the scene. Creating layers, towers, crevices and spillages, he encourages the viewer to explore the communication between the objects and the many textures and and touches in his painting.
